(b. 1939) After serving for five years as the Norwegian Minister for Environmental Affairs, Brundtland became Norway’s first female Prime Minister in February, 1981.  Nearly 50% of her cabinet was female and she served two more terms between 1986 and 1996.  Following her service as leader of the Labor Party and as Prime Minister, Brundtland was elected Director-General of the World Health Organization in 1998.  The Financial Times considered her the 4th most influential European in the last 25 years, behind Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Margaret Thatcher.  She has been suggested as a candidate for Secretary General of the United Nations following Kofi Annan’s term.  She was educated as a Medical Doctor at the University of Oslo and received her Master of Public Health from Harvard University.
