Message from Margot Wallström
Chair, Ministerial Initiative
VicePresident, European Commission

April 7, 2009

The Council is an organization working to promote issues which are of the utmost importance to women, which is why it is crucial that we support the U.N. action against sexual violence in conflict. This is a campaign that aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence, especially sexual violence, which is a horrifying weapon of warfare that devastates the lives of so many women and their families.

The rape of women, but also young boys, is increasingly being used as a military strategy and can no longer be treated as a random crime. The so-called warlords in many conflict areas have recognized its value as a weapon, being far less expensive than any other; it can destroy the hope of recovery of entire communities. The survivors are often left without any remedy of seeking justice; they are also left with a feeling of shame and no resources to seek help for the life-long physical and psychological traumas that are the consequences of rape.

Although the U.N. is already engaged through various means in preventing this crime, we must acknowledge that so much more can and must be done. The U.N. will seek to improve the promotion of women's rights in all its political and development work and enhance their resources for the deterrence of sexual violence. I encourage anyone who is interested and wants to take action to visit www.stoprapenow.org.
