On Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at the Aspen Institute’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., the Council of Women World Leaders hosted a roundtable discussion with the Rt. Hon. Harriet Harman and Vera Baird QC, UK Solicitor-General, about the British Equality Bill. Present to give an American response to the Minister’s comments were Commissioner Christine Griffin, Acting Vice Chair of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and US Representative Niki Tsongas (D-MA). The speakers discussed the change in women’s roles between the last economic downturn in the 1990s and the current economic crisis and the UK Equality Bill.
This discussion was held within the framework of the Council of Women World Leaders’ Ministerial Initiative and the Madeleine K. Albright Women's Voices at the Aspen Institute Series. The Ministerial Initiative represents an extraordinary opportunity for women leaders at the ministerial level to promote democracy, gender equality, and good governance through dialogue and joint action.
