Transforming Policies, Negotiating Peace,
and The Difference Difference Makes

November 2008

In November 2008, members of the Club of Madrid, heads of state and government, met at the Global Forum on Leadership for Shared Societies to discuss the importance of women's inclusion in governance and peace processes. This video features interviews with former presidents and prime ministers in order to illustrate the impact women have in three topic areas. In “Transforming Politics,” the leaders interviewed speak about the crucial part women play in politics and how that role is changing and growing- from the election of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir in Iceland as the first democratically elected woman president in the world in 1980, to the changing culture of leadership brought on by the inclusion of women in decision-making positions.   “Negotiating Peace” demonstrates the essential role of women in negotiation processes. Finally, “The Difference Difference Makes” discusses the monumental benefit inherent in women’s approach to leadership.  “Presence is only the first step, delivering genuine outcomes that generate change is the measurable step”-Jenny Shipley (President, New Zealand 1997-1999). Women must enable other women in order to create an environment which encourages and rewards these differences so that more change can be seen in the future.
